OpenAI, the non-profit research organization focused on artificial intelligence, today announced the appointment of Emmett Shear as its new CEO. Shear, one of the co-founders of Twitch, the live video streaming platform for gamers, will assume the role on January 1, 2024.

“We are thrilled to welcome Emmett to OpenAI,” said Sam Altman, co-founder and president of OpenAI. “Emmett is an experienced leader with a deep understanding of technology and innovation. His experience will be invaluable to OpenAI as we continue our work to develop AI safely and responsibly.”

Shear has a wealth of experience in the technology industry. Prior to founding Twitch, he served as vice president of product management at YouTube. He has also worked at companies such as Microsoft and Google.
